The oil and gas industry, also known as the Petroleum industry, consists of the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and pipelines), and marketing of petroleum products. The largest volume products produced by the industry are fuel and petroleum; which are vital to the function and existence of many industries thus meaning that majority of the global economies depend on the function of the oil and gas industry. The petroleum industry can be divided into three main sectors: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream however Midstream is included in Downstream commonly. Upstream, commonly known as exploration and production – E&P, consists of searching for potential underground or underwater crude oil and natural gas fields, drilling exploratory wells, and subsequently drilling and operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil or raw natural gas to the surface. Downstream is the refining of petroleum crude oil and the processing and purifying of raw natural gas, as well as the marketing and distribution of products derived from crude oil and natural gas. After the start of the crude oil industry, the first entrepreneurs discovered that the closer they drilled to the sea the more oil was found and thus began the start of the offshore oil and gas industry. Dealing with many technological and logistical problems, the offshore oil industry contributes to around 30% of the world’s crude oil production.
The paint industry helps in the protection of these onshore and offshore oil rigs, which face hostile conditions, and onshore oil plants by applying protective coatings and paint to the following areas:
